某大学訪問2日目

友人のAb含むPh.D Candidateの学生さんたちと朝8:30から打ち合わせ。昨夜Abが夕方妻と約束があるというので朝からになった。当日はせっかく頑張って起きて8:30に来たというのに誰も来てねー！皆がそろったのは15分後くらいだった。しかも早朝の会議を提案した本人のAbが遅刻した上に朝10時からの用事を思い出したとか言って打ち合わせを抜けてしまった。なんというマイペース。
昼からは別の打ち合わせに参加するため無料バスでPalo Alto駅に向かい、Palo Alto駅前のタクシー乗り場からCupertinoに向かう。タクシーに乗ったら黒人の運転手が「俺を覚えているか？俺はお前を覚えているぞ？Guest Houseの生活はどうだ？」と話しかけて来た。よく見ると日曜日に乗っけてくれた運ちゃんではないか。「帰りも乗っていかないか、この携帯に掛ければ15分で来るぞ」とのことなのでちょどよいので帰りも乗っけてもらうことにする。運ちゃんの話を聞くに、運ちゃんはソマリア出身でビジネススクールで英語を学んでアメリカに来て、その後タクシーの会社に入ったらしい。タクシーの運ちゃんにしては博識で、ソマリ語、英語、アラビア語、イタリア語など8ヶ国語を話せるらしい。凄いな。

I had a meeting with students at early in the morning. I went there but there was no one.. All other members were late and one member who suggested to start the meeting in the morning went somewhere during the meeting.. What a way he goes in! In the afternoon, I went to Cupertino by taxi. The taxi driver was the person who sent me to the guest house on Sunday. We talked about learning language he said he is from Somalia and moved to the US after learning English at business school. He said he can speak 8 languages including Somali, English, Arabic, Italian. Amazing!
